The first “wine blockchain” in the Occitanie region was launched on Thursday June 30 at Celliers Jean d’Alibert in the Minervois Bio appellation. This is the second time that this system has been implemented in France.
To meet the growing consumer demand for traceability and transparency, Celliers Jean d’Alibert and Maison Johanès Boubée, a wine subsidiary of the Carrefour brand, which is also a partner in this project, have created a wine blockchain. of blocks, in French). It is a database that contains all the information related to the Organic Minervois, from the vineyard to the distribution, going through all the stages of production, packaging and distribution of the wine. Specifically, this storage technology materializes in a QR code printed on the bottle label. It is enough to flash it with a smartphone to know the individualized history of this wine : place of harvest, mode of production, key figures, route of the product, etc. To obtain this result, it was necessary to enter all the links of the chain into the software. : its identity, its organic certification, the controls carried out at each stage to guarantee the authenticity of the wine.
In presenting this long collaborative work, Éric Yung, General Manager of Maison Johanès Boubée, specified “ Thanks to the sharing of all this information, the blockchain certifies the complete traceability of the products, it is a guarantee of quality. “. Jean-Luc Bourel, director of Cellars, “ Behind this QR, there are women and men committed to a responsible approach. For the winemaker, whose photo is also included in the data, it is a recognition and appreciation of her work. This technology makes it possible to put it back at the center of production. “. Merchandise purchasing director Jean-Philippe Limiro supports these comments: “ The abundance of new labels sows some confusion among consumers […] This support reinforces the wine growers who are committed to organic farming “.
Currently, the volume affected by the blockchain amounts to 266 000 passes, that is, 35 % of Minervois Bio production, but that could change quickly. The first blockchain installed in Bordeaux Bio vintage 2020 generated an increase of 7 % sales.
